Caracas: Interim President Delcy Rodriguez appointed veteran diplomat Felix Plasencia as Venezuela’s new foreign minister on Monday.

This major cabinet change follows back-to-back earthquakes on June 24 that devastated the nation, leaving 4,561 dead and 16,740 injured.

Plasencia is an experienced diplomat who previously served as foreign minister from 2021 to 2022 and acted as ambassador to the United Kingdom and China.

Earlier this year, he served as head of mission in the United States, a role marking a diplomatic reset after the US capture of socialist president Nicolas Maduro.

In his new capacity, Plasencia will lead a ministry merging foreign affairs and trade. He replaces Yvan Gil, who shifts to lead the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Amid the disaster, the United States has pledged nearly $400 million in aid and deployed two warships to assist recovery efforts.

As Venezuela begins the difficult rebuilding process, thousands remain missing, and officials continue to manage the heavy human toll.
