Mexico City: At least 10 people were killed and 10 others injured in a catastrophic multi-vehicle pileup in the Mexican state of Jalisco on Sunday. The crash occurred on the Guadalajara-Tepic highway near Hostotipaquillo when a cargo truck struck several stationary vehicles.
Emergency crews were already responding to an earlier collision when the second truck plowed into the scene, triggering a massive fire that destroyed multiple vehicles. Among the deceased were two children.
Those injured included two National Guard officers in serious condition and four U.S. citizens who sustained minor injuries. Authorities are currently investigating the cause, with initial reports suggesting the truck suffered a brake failure.
Fatal road accidents involving heavy trucks are a recurring safety issue in Mexico, often attributed to factors like mechanical failure, driver fatigue, and speeding.
