Heat wave smashes temperature records across central US

A severe heat wave has shattered temperature records over much of the central United States, with numerous cities posting their highest temperatures for this time of year while millions remain under excessive heat warnings.
According to the National Weather Service, the deadly heat is being fuelled by a prolonged high-pressure system, with temperatures reaching triple digits in numerous states. Authorities have warned that prolonged exposure to the heat can result in dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, especially in youngsters, the elderly, and those with underlying medical disorders.
Officials have recommended citizens to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of water, and keep an eye on vulnerable neighbours and family members. The high heat has also raised energy demand, as households rely extensively on air conditioners, putting further strain on power lines.
Forecasters predict the hot wave to last many more days, with record-breaking temperatures conceivable before cooler weather returns.
