London : Andy Burnham has moved a step closer to becoming the UK's next prime minister after securing the backing of 322 Labour MPs on the first day of nominations for the party's leadership contest.
Burnham is the only declared candidate to replace Keir Starmer and is just one nomination short of making it mathematically impossible for a rival to enter the race. If no challenger emerges, he is expected to be confirmed as Labour leader next week before taking office as prime minister on July 20.
Under Labour's rules, leadership hopefuls must secure the support of at least 81 MPs to qualify for the ballot. With only 81 MPs yet to nominate anyone, Burnham's commanding lead has effectively cleared his path to the party leadership.
