Rome: An explosion at a fireworks factory in central Italy killed a mother and her son on Wednesday. The tragic incident occurred at the family-owned Pirotecnica Mattei facility in Torano di Borgorose, located about 70 kilometers northeast of Rome.

Firefighters recovered the bodies of 60-year-old Teresa Tozzi and her 30-year-old son, Simone Colle, who worked at the factory. Two other employees managed to survive the blast, which completely flattened a building used for handling explosive materials.

This marks the second fatal blast to hit the same facility in three years. In July 2023, another explosion at the site killed Colle's uncle and his two children, leading to involuntary manslaughter convictions for the factory owners.

Despite that previous tragedy, the company had recently resumed operations under a new license. A local labor union strongly condemned the situation, demanding a rigorous investigation into whether safety rules were violated.
