Ankara : US President Donald Trump has announced plans to remove Syria from the United States' list of state sponsors of terrorism, saying the decision is aimed at helping the war-torn country rebuild and revive its economy.
In a letter sent to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa following their meeting in Ankara on Wednesday, Trump said he wanted to remove barriers preventing Syria's recovery. He added that American companies were ready to invest in the country and support its economic growth.
Trump said he had formally informed the US Congress of the decision. Under US law, Congress must complete a 45-day review before the move can take effect.
Being listed as a state sponsor of terrorism brings several restrictions, including limits on US foreign assistance, defence exports and certain financial transactions. Removing Syria from the list is expected to ease those restrictions and improve the country's access to international investment.
Syria's Central Bank Governor Safwat Raslan welcomed the decision, saying it would encourage investment, support economic recovery and help reintegrate Syria into the global economy.
The announcement follows Trump's executive order last year ending a US sanctions programme on Syria, a step that paved the way for the country to reconnect with the international financial system.
Saudi Arabia is among the countries planning major investments in Syria, with several Saudi firms preparing billion-dollar projects. Other Gulf nations have also pledged financial support for the country's reconstruction.
