Augusta: Senior Democrats have called on Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner to withdraw from the race after a former partner accused him of sexual assault, an allegation he has strongly denied.
The accusation, first reported by Politico, alleges that Platner forced himself on a former girlfriend in 2021. In a video posted on X, Platner described the allegation as "troubling, serious and false" and said he was considering the best path forward while remaining committed to defeating Republican Senator Susan Collins.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said it would withdraw financial support if Platner remains the party's nominee. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and DSCC Chair Kirsten Gillibrand said the allegations were deeply disturbing and urged Platner to step aside.
The Maine Democratic Party and Senator Elizabeth Warren also called on Platner to withdraw, saying the allegations should be addressed outside the Senate campaign.
The controversy comes at a critical time for Democrats, who view Maine as a key battleground in their effort to regain control of the US Senate in the November midterm elections.
