Madrid: Wildfires are raging across Spain and Portugal, fuelled by an intense temperature, high winds, and dry vegetation, forcing evacuations and putting a strain on emergency services. Flames have spread to a major tourist site in Spain, leading officials to evacuate residents and visitors and closing highways and sending out hundreds of firefighters, planes, and military emergency units to put out the fire.
Multiple wildfires have erupted in adjacent Portugal, exceeding local firefighting capability. The government has launched the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, requesting additional firefighting aircraft and manpower from partner countries to assist with the fast-moving fires.
Officials have warned that severe temperatures and challenging weather conditions can worsen the situation in the coming days, prompting concerns about further evacuations, damage to homes and forests, and interruptions to tourism during the peak summer season.
