Madrid : More than 1,000 people died from heat-related causes in Spain during June as the country recorded its hottest first half of the year on record, highlighting the growing impact of extreme temperatures across Europe.

Official data showed at least 1,028 heat-related deaths were recorded in June, more than double the 407 reported during the same month last year. Most of the deaths occurred during a severe heatwave that pushed temperatures above 40°C in several parts of the country.

Spain's national weather agency said the January-to-June period was the hottest since records began. Health officials warned that prolonged high temperatures continue to pose a serious risk, particularly for older people and other vulnerable groups.

The deadly conditions were part of a wider heatwave affecting several European countries, where authorities have reported rising heat-related deaths, issued health warnings and taken emergency measures to protect the public. Scientists say climate change is making such extreme weather events more frequent and intense.
