BEIJING: A pilot was killed and thirteen people were injured after a small aircraft crashed into Beijing's tallest building, according to Chinese authorities on Saturday.

The rare incident occurred on Friday when a single-engine, two-seat light aircraft struck the 528-meter CITIC Tower in the capital's Chaoyang District.

The high-altitude impact left a visible hole in the windows of one of the skyscraper's upper floors, while plane debris was discovered at the base.

Local authorities confirmed in a statement shared on WeChat that the pilot was the only person on board the aircraft and died at the scene. While officials confirmed the total number of injuries, they have not yet elaborated on what caused the tragic collision.
