China seeks to curb 'unfair' competition in food delivery sector

Beijing: China made a decision to reduce what it calls ‘unfair’ competition in the country's food delivery sector, as regulators ramp up efforts to stop aggressive discounting and pricing wars among major food delivery platforms.

Authorities said that they would increase monitoring of online food delivery services in order to promote fair competition, protect the interests of consumers, merchants, and delivery workers, and support the economic development of platforms.

The act takes place in the midst of fierce competition between top meal delivery services, who have been attracting clients with huge discounts and freebies in an effort to increase their market share. Regulators are worried that these kinds of actions could suppress competition and put delivery riders and restaurants under financial strain.

In an effort to strike a balance between innovation, stricter regulatory monitoring, and fair market practices, China has recently increased surveillance of its internet platform businesses.
