Young Canadians Take Government to Court Over Climate Plan

Ottawa: Three young Canadians have filed a lawsuit against the federal government, arguing that it has failed to meet its legal obligation to prepare a credible climate action plan for 2030.

The case, backed by environmental and health advocacy groups, seeks a court order requiring the government to update its climate strategy and take stronger action to protect Canadians from the growing impacts of climate change.

The lawsuit comes as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government reshapes Canada’s climate and energy policies. Since taking office in March 2025, Carney has rolled back several environmental measures, including the carbon tax for individuals and a proposed emissions cap for the oil and gas sector.

Environmental groups involved in the case argue that these changes have weakened Canada’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and made it harder for the country to meet its climate commitments.

The government has defended its approach, saying Canada must strengthen its economy and reduce its reliance on the United States amid trade tensions. Ottawa has also pushed forward major energy and infrastructure projects that it considers important for national development.

The lawsuit highlights Canada’s vulnerability to climate change, noting that the country is warming at roughly twice the global average rate. In northern regions, temperatures are rising nearly three times faster than the global average, according to court documents.

Prime Minister Carney acknowledged in December that Canada is unlikely to achieve its 2030 climate targets, a key issue raised by the plaintiffs in the case.

The legal challenge is part of a growing international movement seeking to hold governments accountable for climate policies. Similar cases have been brought in countries including Germany, the Netherlands and France.

Canada’s government is also scheduled to face a separate climate-related trial in October, in which young Canadians argue that the previous administration under Justin Trudeau violated their rights through inadequate action on climate change.
