Trump Warns Beirut Strike Could Jeopardize Peace Talks
U.S. President Donald J. Trump has criticized the recent attack on Beirut, saying it “should not have happened,” especially at a time when negotiations toward a potential peace agreement involving Iran are reportedly close to completion.
In a statement, Trump said Israel has the right to defend itself against threats, but argued that the strike was a response to a “very small and meaningless” provocation in which no casualties were reported.
He warned that continued military escalation could jeopardize ongoing diplomatic efforts, adding that a broader regional peace deal—potentially including Lebanon—is within reach.
“We are very close to a deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down,” he said.
Trump also urged restraint from all parties, calling for an immediate halt to Israeli strikes in Lebanon and an end to attacks by other groups, including Hezbollah, against Israel.
“This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace — let’s not blow it,” he added.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions in the region, as diplomatic channels continue to explore pathways toward de-escalation.
