Hong Kong: Hong Kong customs officers arrested six people in a major operation on fake World Cup products worth about $20 million, officials said Thursday.

Customs officials stated around 230,000 suspected fake products were seized, including over 30,000 premium replica football jerseys intended for shipment to overseas markets, with nearly 80% destined for the Americas.

The task also exposed counterfeit football boots, gloves, luxury handbags, watches, and electronic products, which are thought to be part of a larger smuggling and online sales network linked to tournament demand.

According to authorities, one truck driver was arrested at a border post connecting Hong Kong to mainland China and Macau, and five others were arrested for selling fake jerseys online. All six have been released on bail.

Investigators are still tracing the origin of the goods, as global demand for World Cup merchandise prompts an upsurge in counterfeit trade activity.

If found guilty, violators of Hong Kong's counterfeit goods legislation face up to five years in prison and severe penalties.
