Washington: NASA has announced the four astronauts selected for the Artemis III mission, which is set to launch in 2027, marking another significant milestone in the agency's efforts to return humans to the Moon and establish a long-term presence there. Commander Randy Bresnik leads the team, and other members included are European Space Agency pilot Luca Parmitano and mission specialists Andre Douglas and Frank Rubio.

Despite earlier attempts to land men on the lunar surface, Artemis III will now test essential spacecraft docking and operational processes in Earth orbit. The crew will fly aboard NASA's Orion spacecraft and perform complex rendezvous operations using lunar landing technologies developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin.

The project, according to NASA officials, is a major example of the relationships and technology required for future Moon landings. One of the most technically difficult missions in the Artemis program, the flight will need many launches and coordination between some of the most powerful rockets in the world.

The statement comes with delays in the development of both SpaceX and Blue Origin's lunar landers. NASA still plans to support a crewed lunar landing mission under Artemis IV, which is presently scheduled for 2028, by applying the lessons learned from Artemis III.
