Conakry: At least 18 people have died after an informal gold mine collapsed in western Guinea, with rescue teams continuing to search the site for more victims.

The accident occurred on Monday near the town of Gaoual, about 386 kilometres from the capital, Conakry. Authorities said miners had recently flocked to the area in search of gold.

Government spokesman Ousmane Gaoual Diallo said 18 bodies had been recovered so far, warning that the toll could rise as rescue operations continue.

Deadly accidents are common at artisanal mines across West Africa, where mining activities often take place with little regulation or oversight. Guinea has experienced several similar incidents in recent years, including a mine collapse that killed at least 15 people in 2025.
