Berlin: Germany has blamed Russia for its shocking defeat in the election for a non-permanent member on the United Nations Security Council, accusing Moscow of campaigning against Berlin as revenge for its support for Ukraine.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul criticised the result as a "bitter defeat" and claimed Russia plotted to destroy Germany's candidature among UN members. He also suggested that Germany's strong support for Israel may have influenced voting decisions in some countries.
Portugal and Austria won the two seats allotted to the Western European and Others Group in the General Assembly voting, while Germany failed to attract enough votes, losing its first Security Council election.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Germany would be loyal to the UN and actively participate in international diplomacy despite the loss. On the other hand, opposition politicians criticised the government's effort and described the result as a major diplomatic humiliation.
In the midst of increasing tensions with Russia, Germany is trying to preserve its role as a leader in European support for Ukraine and expand its global influence.
