Doctors Failed to Act on ‘Warning Signs’, Maradona Death Trial Hears

San Isidro, Argentina:  Doctors ignored critical warning signs before Diego Maradona’s 2020 death, a witness testified at the trial examining the football legend's demise. Forensic physician Carlos Cassinelli told the court that healthcare providers failed to act on life-threatening symptoms during home hospitalization.

Cassinelli noted that Maradona showed progressive deterioration, including swollen limbs and fingers, breathlessness, hypertension, and a rapid heart rate. Despite these severe symptoms posing clear life-threatening risks, doctors never altered their medical approach or investigated the swelling.

According to the medical board expert, the superstar endured roughly 12 hours of agony before dying. Maradona succumbed to heart failure and acute pulmonary edema two weeks after undergoing surgery.

Seven healthcare professionals are currently on trial in Argentina for potential negligence that may have contributed to his death. Cassinelli asserted that home care was a mistake and a warning should have been issued as his condition worsened post-discharge.

The accused deny responsibility, maintaining that Maradona died of natural causes after years battling substance addictions. Court proceedings in San Isidro are expected to extend beyond August.
