San Isidro: A surgeon who treated Diego Maradona after brain surgery has told a court that the football legend should never have been allowed to recover at home under the conditions provided, as the trial into his death in 2020 continues.
According to neurosurgeon Rodolfo Benvenuti, Maradona required intensive medical supervision after the operation to remove a cerebral blood clot, which included 24-hour monitoring and vital emergency equipment. He stated that these measures were required for a safe recovery.
‘If all the conditions were not fulfilled in the house, home care should never have been allowed,’ Benvenuti told the court, according to testimony submitted in the hearings.
Prosecutors argue that Maradona's death from acute pulmonary oedema and heart failure a few weeks after his surgery possibly have been caused by poor medical treatment. Currently, seven medical professionals are on trial for alleged criminal negligence; the defendants argue that Maradona passed away naturally and deny any acts of negligence.
Given the circumstances surrounding final days of Maradona and his global football legacy, the case continues to be one of Argentina's most highly watched legal procedures.
