NEW DELHI: A catastrophic morning fire swept through a building housing the Flourish Stay hotel in southern New Delhi, killing at least 21 people and hospitalizing dozens more who became trapped inside the premises.
The fast-moving blaze broke out early in the morning in the densely populated Malviya Nagar neighborhood. Heavy smoke and flames rapidly engulfed the multi-story complex, blocking corridors and leaving terrified guests shouting from windows for help.
Emergency services deployed eight fire engines to bring the inferno under control, working alongside local residents who rushed to assist in rescuing more than 40 people from the burning structure. Local authorities revealed that several of the deceased were foreign nationals, primarily from African nations, who were visiting the city for medical treatments.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow over the tragic event, offering condolences and announcing a direct financial package of 200,000 rupees for each victim's family. While the exact cause of the fire remains under official investigation, police units and local safety agencies are actively reviewing compliance with local building safety laws.
