Abu Dhabi Freezes Rent Increases Amid Regional Tensions

Abu Dhabi : Abu Dhabi has introduced a temporary freeze on rent increases for residential, commercial and industrial properties, offering relief to tenants as regional tensions continue to affect the Gulf.

Under the new measure, all tenancy contract renewals will be processed without any rent increase, while new contracts for previously rented properties must be offered at the same rental rate as the preceding agreement. The decision takes effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice.

The move suspends a rule that normally allows landlords to raise rents by up to five percent annually, provided tenants receive advance notice before renewal.

Officials said the measure is aimed at supporting residents and businesses during a period of uncertainty. It follows a series of steps taken by authorities since the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict, including assistance for travellers affected by flight disruptions.

Abu Dhabi introduced its first official rental index in 2024 to improve transparency and stability in the property market. The latest decision is expected to ease financial pressure on tenants while helping maintain stability in the emirate's real estate sector.
