Florida: The state of Florida has filed a first-in-the-nation lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging the company allowed ChatGPT to ‘aid and abet’ mass shooters and put public safety at risk for commercial profit.

Announced on Monday, the state-led civil complaint accuses the tech giant of ignoring internal safety warnings and aggressively marketing its AI product to millions of residents while hiding its potential dangers.

The lawsuit centers heavily on two deadly shootings in Florida. This includes a criminal investigation into whether a gunman used ChatGPT to plan the April 2025 shooting at Florida State University, which left two people dead. In another case, a suspect allegedly asked the chatbot how to hide human bodies in trash bags.

OpenAI disputed the allegations, stating that ChatGPT is a safe, general-purpose tool that only provided factual, publicly available responses and directed both individuals to seek help.
