New Jersey: The mayor of a New Jersey city, Ras Baraka declared an immediate mandatory curfew Sunday within a half-mile radius of the Delaney Hall migrant detention facility.
‘The decision followed successive nights of escalating clashes between law enforcement and protesters demonstrating against federal immigration policies. The curfew restricts all local access to the 1,000-bed privately operated facility from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am daily until further notice.
Tensions boiled over Saturday evening when a faction of protesters attempted to breach a police barricade, prompting law enforcement to deploy tear gas. The demonstrations were originally triggered by a hunger and work strike launched by detainees protesting living conditions inside the facility.
While security responsibilities had recently been transferred from federal ICE agents to state police to defuse tensions, the measures failed to prevent nighttime violence, drawing strong condemnation from Governor Mikie Sherrill.
