UN says protecting children online now an 'urgent priority

GENEVA:  The United Nations has officially declared that protecting children online is now an ‘urgent priority’ for the international community. In an assertive global call to action, the organization emphasised that the rapidly evolving digital landscape presents unprecedented risks to young users, requiring immediate and decisive intervention from both governments and private corporations.

Central to the UN's mandate is a demand for tech giants to take responsibility for the environments they create. The UN is urging these platforms to systematically embed ‘safety by design,’ meaning child protections must be built directly into the core architecture of digital services rather than treated as an afterthought.

Furthermore, the declaration stresses that entities must be held strictly accountable for any online harms that impact children. As digital threats grow more sophisticated, the UN warns that reactive measures are no longer sufficient to guarantee safety.
