UN Warns Record-Breaking Global Heat Likely Before 2030

Geneva: The United Nations’ weather agency has warned that the world is highly likely to experience a new record-breaking hot year before 2030 as climate change continues to intensify.

The World Meteorological Organization said rising greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, combined with the possible return of an El Niño weather pattern, are expected to drive global temperatures to even more dangerous levels in the coming years.

Scientists say the continued buildup of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases is increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, including intense heatwaves, droughts and heavy rainfall.

The warning comes as many parts of the world continue to face unusually high temperatures and climate-related disasters linked to global warming.

The agency said the chances of temporarily crossing critical global temperature thresholds are increasing, raising concerns about worsening impacts on health, food supplies, water resources and ecosystems worldwide.

Climate experts have repeatedly stressed that reducing fossil fuel emissions remains essential to slowing long-term global warming and limiting the severity of future climate extremes.
