PARIS: An exceptionally early heatwave sweeping across France has resulted in seven heat-related fatalities, government spokesperson Maud Bregeon confirmed Tuesday.
The unseasonal spring surge has shattered temperature records nationwide, prompting the weather agency Météo-France to issue unprecedented May orange alerts across multiple western regions as temperatures climbed to 36 degrees Celsius.
According to officials, five of the seven victims tragically drowned in lakes, rivers, and coastal beaches as crowds rushed to water bodies to escape the scorching conditions. The remaining two fatalities occurred during competitive sporting events in Paris and Lyon, prompting immediate state interventions.
In response to the crisis, the French government has mandated local authorities to implement strict safety protocols for outdoor athletic activities and maximize public hydration efforts. Forecasters warn the intense heat dome will persist through Thursday, amplifying climate change concerns.
