Rome: Italian luxury carmaker Ferrari has revealed its first fully electric vehicle, marking a major shift for the iconic brand as it joins rivals in the growing high-performance EV market.

The new model, named “Luce” — the Italian word for “Light” — combines Ferrari’s signature speed with electric technology. The company said the vehicle can reach speeds of more than 310 kilometres per hour and travel over 530 kilometres on a single charge.

Ferrari said the Luce can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in just 2.5 seconds and is powered by a large 122 kWh battery pack. At 2.26 tonnes, it is also the heaviest vehicle ever produced by the company.

The Luce represents a major design change for Ferrari. It is only the second four-door model in the company’s history and the first Ferrari built with five seats, moving beyond the brand’s traditional two-seat sports car identity.

Ferrari chairman John Elkann described the launch as the beginning of a new era for the company, saying the model reflects Ferrari’s ambition to shape the future of the automotive industry.

The launch comes at a time when several luxury carmakers are slowing down their electric vehicle plans due to weaker-than-expected global demand for EVs. Last year, Ferrari lowered its target for electric vehicles, saying fully electric models are now expected to make up 20 percent of its lineup by 2030, compared to an earlier goal of 40 percent.
