California Officials Eliminate Threat of Massive Chemical Tank Explosion

California: Authorities in Southern California reported that the risk of a massive explosion from a hot chemical tank has been eliminated after emergency workers successfully lowered the vessel's internal pressure.

The tank at a GKN Aerospace factory in Garden Grove included thousands of litres of methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable chemical used in the production of plastics. Due to suspicions about a potential explosion, nearby communities were affected over a weekend by emergency declarations and evacuation orders.

According to fire officials, a crack in the tank allowed pressure to leak out, which helped in lowering the temperature of the chemical. Constant cooling operations by rescue workers greatly stabilised the situation and prevented the possibility of a devastating explosion.

Officials cautioned that smaller fires or chemical spills may still occur even though they said the worst-case scenario was no longer an issue. As a precaution, some evacuation procedures are still in place, and emergency workers are still keeping an eye on the scene. There have been no reports of dangerous chemical discharges or injuries.
