Washington DC: The gunman fatally shot by the Secret Service at the White House has been identified as Nasire Best. Best was killed after pulling out a handgun near the north fence line, prompting an immediate lethal response from Uniformed Division officers.
Records show that Best suffered from severe mental health delusions, repeatedly claiming to law enforcement that he was Jesus Christ. During a previous security encounter at the complex, he actively demanded that officers arrest him while shouting religious proclamations.
This fatal encounter was not Best's first attempt to breach the executive mansion's secure perimeter. He had been intercepted by security at least twice before for suspicious behavior and for previous attempts to access the grounds.
The Secret Service confirmed that the White House was secured and no protectees were harmed during the incident. An investigation is ongoing into how Best, a known repeat offender with severe psychiatric delusions, managed to return armed.
