Major increase in Croatian wildfires this year

Zagreb: The amount of terrain scorched by wildfires in Croatia has jumped dramatically so far this year, local authorities announced Saturday, sparking concern ahead of a challenging summer season.

During the first four months of the year, wildfires ravaged approximately 5,060 hectares (12,500 acres) of land. This marks roughly a 70 percent increase in scorched territory compared to the same period last year, according to Croatian fire department chief Slavko Tucakovic. The total number of recorded fires has also risen by 20 percent.

The spike comes as international climate scientists warn that global wildfire risks are intensifying, fueled by climate change and a strong El Niño weather pattern.

Croatia typically experiences its peak wildfire activity along the Adriatic coastline between June and September. Last year, seasonal blazes across the country resulted in two fatalities and injured 18 people, including eight firefighters.
