NEW DELHI:  The Indian government has issued a formal statement condemning an attack on an Indian-flagged commercial ship that occurred yesterday off the coast of Oman. The Ministry of External Affairs labeled the targeting of civilian mariners and merchant shipping as ‘unacceptable,’ expressing deep concern over the continued threats to international maritime trade.

The official statement confirmed that all Indian crew members on board the vessel are safe following the incident. New Delhi extended its gratitude to the Omani authorities for their prompt response and successful rescue operation, which ensured the safety of the civilian mariners involved in the attack.

In its diplomatic response, India reiterated its stance that the targeting of commercial shipping and the endangerment of innocent crews must be avoided. The government emphasized that such actions impede the fundamental freedom of navigation and global commerce, which are essential for regional and international stability.

The incident comes amid a period of heightened maritime tension in the region. India has consistently advocated for the protection of sea lanes and has recently increased its naval presence in the Arabian Sea to safeguard merchant vessels from similar threats and piracy.

As of May 14, the Indian government continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing that maritime security remains a top priority. The Ministry of External Affairs called for an end to actions that jeopardize the safety of civilian mariners operating in international waters.
