ROME: The Princess of Wales arrived in northern Italy on Wednesday for her first official overseas visit since disclosing her cancer diagnosis and subsequent remission.
The two-day solo trip marks a major milestone in her return to public duties, representing her first extended official foreign engagement in nearly three-and-a-half years.
The visit is centered in the city of Reggio Emilia, where the Princess is focusing on early childhood development, a central theme of her public work.
She is visiting to learn firsthand about the ‘Reggio Emilia approach,’ a world-renowned educational philosophy that emphasizes the potential of children for self-development through nature and community relationships.
Aides to the Princess described the journey as a ‘huge moment’ personally and an ‘important step in her journey’ following the completion of her chemotherapy.
While she has made brief appearances and attended a few private events since revealing her remission in early 2025, this working tour signals a new "global mission" to elevate early years issues to an international stage.
The Princess of Wales last conducted an official overseas visit in December 2022, when she traveled to Boston with Prince William. This current solo trip was specifically chosen to link her long-term advocacy for childhood well-being with leading global experts, with her team indicating that she is now ‘taking it up a gear’ in her professional commitments.
During her stay, she is expected to receive a prestigious honor recognizing her global promotion of early childhood growth and education. Kensington Palace spokespeople noted that the Princess has been looking forward to the trip, sharing memories of her previous time in Italy with her family before embarking on this significant professional return.
