Madrid: A major international health operation is underway as the cruise ship MV Hondius approaches the Canary Islands following a deadly hantavirus outbreak.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is traveling to Tenerife to coordinate emergency evacuations with Spanish authorities. The vessel, carrying approximately 150 people, is expected to arrive Sunday.
Health officials have confirmed eight cases of the rare Andes virus strain, including three fatalities involving Dutch and German nationals. This specific strain is of high concern due to its rare ability to spread between humans. In response, the United States is arranging a specialized repatriation flight to transport 17 American citizens directly to a federal quarantine facility at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Meanwhile, containment efforts have expanded globally. Spanish authorities are monitoring three flight contacts in Alicante and Catalonia linked to a deceased victim.
In Singapore, two residents previously on the ship have tested negative but remain in a 30-day "safety" quarantine. Despite the mobilization, the WHO maintains that the risk to the general public remains low. Passengers on board are reportedly following strict masking protocols while awaiting their arrival in Tenerife for final processing.
