US and Gulf Nations Push New UN Action on Strait of Hormuz

New York: The United States and several Gulf Arab countries are drafting a new United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at pressuring Iran over rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal comes after repeated attacks on commercial shipping and growing fears over disruptions to global oil supplies.
According to reports, the draft resolution calls on Iran to stop attacks on merchant vessels, remove sea mines, and end attempts to impose tolls on ships passing through the strait. The resolution also seeks to guarantee freedom of navigation through one of the world’s most important energy trade routes.
The initiative is being backed by Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar alongside Washington. US officials say the move is intended to restore maritime security and prevent further escalation in the Gulf region.
However, the resolution could face resistance from China and Russia, both of which have previously opposed similar measures against Iran at the UN Security Council.
