Sudan recalls ambassador to Ethiopia after airport attack

Khartoum: The escalating diplomatic tensions between Sudan and Ethiopia reached a critical juncture on Tuesday, as Sudan officially recalled its ambassador following a drone attack on Khartoum International Airport.
The Sudanese government, which is currently aligned with the military, has accused Ethiopia of direct involvement in the strike that occurred on Monday. According to official reports from the news agency SUNA, Sudanese air defenses successfully intercepted and downed the drones targeting the capital’s airport, while local witnesses corroborated the event by reporting explosions and visible smoke in the vicinity.
Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem has characterized the recall as a necessary step for consultations regarding what he described as a ‘UAE-Ethiopia drone attack’. This accusation further complicates the regional landscape, as it links Ethiopia to the United Arab Emirates, a nation that has faced consistent allegations of arming the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
While the UAE has repeatedly denied these claims, Minister Salem asserted that investigations have "conclusively proven" the attack originated from Ethiopian territory.
This incident marks a significant deterioration in relations between the neighboring states, which Salem noted were ‘supposed to be sister’ nations. The conflict in Sudan, which has been raging between the army and the RSF since April 2023, has seen a recent intensification of drone warfare.
By publicly alleging Ethiopian involvement, the Sudanese military is shifting the narrative from an internal power struggle to a broader regional confrontation, posing new challenges for diplomatic resolution in the Horn of Africa.
