Peru troops probed over five deaths in drug operation

LIMA: A preliminary investigation has been launched by Peruvian prosecutors into eight soldiers following a lethal encounter in the south-central Andean region of Huancavelica. The incident occurred on a Saturday when a military patrol attempted to stop a van carrying eight passengers on a road within a prominent coca-growing area. When the vehicle failed to comply with the signal to pull over, the troops opened fire, resulting in the deaths of five passengers and injuries to the remaining three.

The military has defended the actions of the patrol, which included an army captain, asserting that the soldiers acted in self-defense against individuals suspected of having ties to narcotrafficking networks. However, this account is being challenged by local media reports, which suggest that the victims were actually young sportspeople and workers with no involvement in the illegal drug trade. The region of Huancavelica is a significant site for coca cultivation, the primary ingredient used in the production of cocaine.

As a consequence of the lethal shooting, all eight soldiers involved have been arrested as the judicial probe continues. This case highlights the high-stakes nature of military operations in Peru's river valleys, where the nation remains the world’s second-largest producer of cocaine. The investigation aims to determine whether the use of force was a legitimate act of self-defense or a tragic instance of mistaken identity involving innocent civilians.
