Mexico City: A shooting at the ancient Teotihuacán archaeological site near Mexico City has left a 32-year-old Canadian woman dead and 13 others injured after a gunman opened fire before taking his own life, according to Mexican authorities. The attack caused panic among tourists at the UNESCO World Heritage site, with witnesses describing chaos as visitors ran for safety amid gunfire. Victims include people from several countries, including Canada, Colombia, and Russia, and injured individuals ranged in age from 6 to 61.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed solidarity with the victims and said security authorities were investigating the incident while coordinating with the Canadian embassy. Officials recovered weapons at the scene, and initial reports suggest the attacker acted alone. Despite the tragedy, authorities noted that such incidents involving tourists remain rare, though concerns over security have been raised ahead of Mexico’s co-hosting of the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
