Japan Issues Mega-Quake Advisory After Powerful 7.5 Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Alert, 80cm Wave Hits Northern Port

Tokyo: Japan issued an advisory on Monday warning of an increased risk of a possible mega-quake along its northern coast after a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck earlier in the day.
The Japan Meteorological Agency and the Cabinet Office said there is a 1% chance of a larger quake occurring in the coming week near the Chishima Trench region. Officials stressed the advisory was not a prediction but urged residents to strengthen preparedness measures, including checking emergency food supplies and go-bags.
The earthquake struck off the Sanriku coast in northern Japan at 4:53 p.m. local time at a depth of around 10 kilometres, according to the agency.
A tsunami of about 80 centimetres was recorded at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture, while a 40-centimetre wave was observed at another port. Tsunami alerts and advisories remained in effect for parts of the region, with warnings of possible waves up to three metres.
More than 128,000 residents in Iwate and three other northern prefectures were issued non-binding evacuation advisories, disaster officials said.
No major injuries or damage were immediately reported. Authorities said nuclear plants and key infrastructure in the region remained unaffected.
The quake revived memories of Japan’s devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which killed more than 22,000 people and triggered the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
