Philippines Plans Free Legal Aid for Filipinos Facing Trouble Abroad

Manila: Filipino authorities are planning a new programme to provide free legal help for citizens facing legal problems overseas, including family disputes, scams, and other cases.

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) is working with the International Pro Bono Alliance to improve access to legal support for migrants who often struggle with expensive and complicated legal systems in other countries.

Many overseas Filipinos face issues like domestic violence, custody battles, divorce cases, and online “love scams,” but do not know where to get help or cannot afford legal services.

Under the proposed plan, legal experts would offer free consultations and training sessions to help both migrants and government staff understand key laws such as family, property, tax, and inheritance rules.

A referral system is also being considered, which would connect urgent cases directly to volunteer lawyers through a hotline used for human trafficking support.

Officials say the goal is not only to respond to emergencies but also to educate Filipinos abroad so they can better protect themselves and avoid legal problems.
