Mauritius Vows to Pursue Return of Chagos Islands Amid Uncertainty

Mauritius has reaffirmed its determination to reclaim the Chagos Islands, with Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful pledging to use all diplomatic and legal means to secure their return.

Speaking at a regional conference, Ramful described the issue as a matter of justice and said the government would “spare no effort” to complete the decolonisation process. The islands, including Diego Garcia, remain under British control and host a joint US-UK military base.

The comments come as the United Kingdom signalled it may delay plans to transfer sovereignty unless it receives backing from the United States. US President Donald Trump has previously criticised the proposed agreement.

Mauritius’ Attorney General Gavin Glover said the situation reflects broader geopolitical tensions and noted that progress depends on agreement between the UK and the US.

Officials from Mauritius are expected to hold further talks with British counterparts later this month as efforts continue to resolve the long-running dispute.
