UK Seizes $500M Worth of Cocaine Hidden in Banana and Wine Shipments

Authorities in the United Kingdom have seized nearly five tonnes of cocaine worth more than $500 million during a series of operations at a major port near London, officials confirmed.

The drugs were intercepted at London Gateway, one of the country’s largest shipping hubs, over the course of less than a month. According to the UK Home Office, criminal networks attempted to smuggle the cocaine by concealing it within legitimate cargo.

Investigators said the drugs were hidden inside banana shipments and containers of South American red wine in an effort to evade detection. Images released by authorities showed the seized packages concealed within cargo and later laid out for inspection.

Officials did not confirm any arrests linked to the latest operation.

The seizure follows other recent drug smuggling cases at UK ports, including an attempted cocaine shipment worth nearly $100 million discovered at Southampton Docks earlier this year. Authorities say such tactics, particularly hiding drugs in fruit shipments, have been increasingly used by trafficking networks worldwide.

The latest bust marks one of the largest drug seizures in the UK in recent months, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat international drug trafficking.
