Bangladesh mob beats spiritual leader to death: authorities
A self-proclaimed spiritual leader was beaten to death by a mob in Kushtia District on Saturday, according to local officials.
The victim, identified as Shamim Reza Jahangir, reportedly in his 60s, died from his injuries after hundreds of people stormed his residence and attacked him with sticks.
Chief administrative official Touhid bin Hasan said the large crowd carried out the assault, leading to the man’s death.
The incident is the latest in a series of violent episodes in Bangladesh, where mob attacks have increased following the political unrest that led to the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the incident as concerns grow over rising lawlessness and religious tensions in the country.
