Sudan’s army has undergone its most significant military shake-up since the war with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began nearly three years ago. On Thursday, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, appointed General Yasser al-Atta as the new Chief of Staff of the Sudanese Armed Forces.

General al-Atta, a veteran with over 40 years of military service, replaces General Mohamed Othman al-Hussein, who had held the position since 2019. This restructuring includes several other key changes to the high command, including the appointment of new deputies for operations, training, and military intelligence.
