New Zealand Opens Door to Australian-Standard Fuel for 12 Months

Wellington: New Zealand will temporarily allow the domestic supply of fuel that meets Australia’s standards for up to 12 months, as the government moves to ease supply risks linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict and rising global prices.
Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones said the temporary alignment would give fuel importers greater flexibility and access to a wider range of shipments, including those already circulating within the region.
“This is a sensible, time-limited step that allows importers to tap into more fuel options and reduce the risk of disruptions,” Jones said in a statement.
However, he clarified that New Zealand will not go as far as Australia in loosening fuel quality rules to permit higher-sulphur fuel, maintaining its existing environmental standards.
