Khartoum: At least 64 people, including 13 children, were killed in a strike on a hospital in Sudan, according to the World Health Organization.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the attack targeted El-Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur’s capital, killing patients and medical staff, including two nurses and a doctor. A further 89 people were injured, among them eight health workers.

The strike has rendered the hospital non-functional, cutting off critical medical services for residents in the area.

Ghebreyesus said the incident adds to a growing toll of attacks on healthcare facilities during the conflict, with fatalities linked to such strikes now exceeding 2,000.

He warned that attacks on hospitals and medical personnel have both immediate and long-term consequences, depriving already vulnerable communities of essential care.

“Enough blood has been spilled. Enough suffering has been inflicted,” Ghebreyesus said, calling for urgent de-escalation of the conflict and protection of civilians and health workers.

“Health care should never be a target. Peace is the best medicine,” he added.
