An explosion was reported on an oil tanker anchored in the Gulf near Kuwait, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
UKMTO said the vessel’s master reported a large explosion on the port side of the tanker, after which the ship began taking on water. The captain also observed a small craft leaving the area shortly after the blast.
The incident occurred about 30 nautical miles (56 km) southeast of Mubarak Al Kabeer Port in the Gulf.
In an advisory, UKMTO said oil was seen leaking into the water from a cargo tank, raising concerns about possible environmental impact. However, no fires were reported and all crew members were confirmed safe.
In a later statement, the Kuwait Ministry of Interior said the explosion took place outside Kuwait’s territorial waters, approximately 60 km from Mubarak Al Kabeer Port. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.
