Iran is close to selecting a new Supreme Leader to succeed Ali Khamenei, a senior member of the body responsible for appointing the country’s top authority said on Wednesday.
Speaking to state television, Ahmad Khatami said the process was nearing its final stage, but acknowledged that the country was operating under wartime conditions.
“The Supreme Leader will be identified at the closest opportunity. We are close to a conclusion, however the situation in the country is a war situation,” he said.
Khatami, a senior cleric in Iran, is a member of the Assembly of Experts, the powerful clerical body tasked with selecting the Supreme Leader. He also serves on the Guardian Council.
No timeline or details on potential successors were disclosed.
