Palestinian President Urges Full Implementation of Gaza Truce
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on Saturday for the removal of “all obstacles” imposed by Israel that hinder the implementation of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire.
Speaking at an African Union summit, Abbas’ remarks were read by his Prime Minister, Mohammed Mustafa. He stressed the importance of lifting barriers to ensure the smooth operation of a technocratic committee set up to oversee Gaza’s daily governance.
“Removing these obstacles is essential to maintain continuity of services, coordinate humanitarian efforts, and enable a swift recovery,” Abbas said.
The president also accused Israel of continuing to violate the ceasefire agreement with Palestinian militant group Hamas, which took effect in October under a deal brokered by the United States.
“Since the announcement of the ceasefire, more than 500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, which threatens the durability of the truce and the full implementation of its second phase,” he added.
Although the truce entered its second phase last month, violence has persisted in Gaza, with both Israel and Hamas trading blame.
The agreement, endorsed by the United Nations in November, aims to permanently end the conflict in Gaza. Under its terms, Israeli forces are to gradually withdraw, Hamas is expected to disarm, and an international stabilization force will be deployed to maintain security.
Hamas has maintained that disarmament is a red line but has indicated it may consider transferring weapons to a future Palestinian governing authority.
