Beijing: Chinese authorities have carried out the death penalty on eleven individuals tied to a powerful crime network that operated massive scam and gambling operations from bases in northern Myanmar, state media confirmed Thursday.

The executions follow a September 2025 death sentence handed down by a court in Wenzhou, in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, for a range of serious offences. The group was found guilty of homicide, fraud, unlawful detention and running illegal gambling establishments crimes linked to operations that generated more than $1 billion in illicit funds and led to the deaths of numerous Chinese nationals.

China’s Supreme People’s Court upheld the sentences after appeals were dismissed, paving the way for the executions this week. The criminal network, often described as a mafia-style organisation, had established multiple compounds across Myanmar’s borderlands where it orchestrated telecom fraud and exploited victims and workers.

Authorities also noted that relatives of the convicted were permitted to meet with them prior to the executions. The crackdown comes amid broader efforts by Beijing and regional partners to dismantle cross-border scam networks that have proliferated across parts of Southeast Asia, including Myanmar.
