New Delhi: India commemorated its 77th Republic Day on Monday with a vibrant display of national unity, cultural heritage, and defence capability along Kartavya Path. Thousands of citizens and dignitaries gathered to witness the iconic parade that celebrates the adoption of the Indian Constitution the cornerstone of the world’s largest democracy.
The celebrations began with solemn homage at the National War Memorial, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to India’s fallen heroes before the grand march past and aerial flypast that captivated spectators.
In his official Republican Day message, Modi extended his greetings to all citizens, saying, “Best wishes on Republic Day. May this occasion add renewed energy and enthusiasm in our collective resolve to build a Viksit Bharat.” He described the day as a living symbol of India’s honour, dignity, and democratic spirit.
The parade featured a record number of state and Union Territory tableaux, each highlighting themes like the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram and India’s expanding technological and cultural footprint.
A highlight of this edition was the blend of military precision and cultural vibrancy. Tri-service contingents, including the Army, Navy and Air Force, marched alongside marching bands and NCC cadets in meticulously choreographed formations. Advanced indigenous weapon systems, such as BrahMos and Akash missile replicas, were also showcased, reflecting India’s growing defence self‑reliance.
The Air Force added dramatic flair to the celebrations with a flypast involving multiple aircraft in thematic formations. The artistic presentations along the parade route underscored the nation’s diversity, unity and collective aspirations for peace and prosperity.
Chief President of the European Council Antonio Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen witnessed the parade, marking strengthened diplomatic ties between India and the European Union.
Beyond the capital, Republic Day was observed with patriotic fervour across India. Civic bodies, schools, and local communities held flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural programs, and special awareness events focusing on road safety and women empowerment.
In a separate statement shared on social media, Prime Minister Modi reflected on the day’s significance, adding, “This national festival is not just a moment of celebration but a reminder of the values our Constitution enshrines justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.” This sentiment echoed nationwide as citizens reaffirmed their commitment to democratic ideals.
The Republic Day festivities will conclude with the traditional Beating Retreat Ceremony on 29 January, where massed bands of the armed forces will pay tribute to the Tricolour in a ceremonial finale.
